Richard Branson’s “Losing My Virginity”

Reading is one of the habits you as an entrepreneur needs to imbibe (if you have not started doing so). It helps you gain new perspectives about issues and brings in new ideas that you can adapt to your own business. Below are some of the books I have personally read; they are books that have helped me greatly and which I will recommend to any budding entrepreneur

So here are those books…

LOSING MY VIRGINITY

AUTHOR: Richard Branson

Do I still need to introduce Richard Branson to anyone? With companies running in excess of 360, he still has time to stay with his family and friends. Everything started when he was just 16; he started his first business, a magazine called Student.

I have read this book more times than probably any of my other books. Richard Branson tells his stories impeccably well. From the last minute deals that saved his business ass to near-death balloon flight experiences, you would not want to take your eyes off the book for a sec.

What You Might Not Like About This Book

Absolutely Nothing… On second thought, maybe the title.

Is This Book For You?

Are you an entrepreneur (which I am very sure you are), you would do yourself a great deal of help by getting this book.

BUSINESS STRIPPED BARE

AUTHOR: Richard Branson

I included this in my list because I actually paid for it, the only funny thing is that I never got the book. I paid in advance at a bookshop where I buy quite a good number of my books but this particular one didn’t get to me because they (the bookshop) moved base.

The manager tried not to be rude and I kept nursing the hope of a refund, maybe I would get it as a new year’s gift next year (by which time I would have “waited” for almost 2 years.

What You Might Not Like About This Book

Again probably only the title… That’s Richard Branson for you.

MADE IN AMERICA

AUTHOR: Sam Walton

Sam Walton is the epitome of the American success story. From the tiny town of Bentonville (which is actually believed to be too small to sustain a large retail store), they run the activities of the giant WalMart Retail chain. As I would open a retail store and subsequently chains in the near future, his story has been of untold inspiration to me.

He came in as the new kid on the block but he left the scene as the biggest man around. You can’t get your mind around all the lessons in this book, they are just too many.

Why You May Not Like This Book

If you are uninterested in real estate or retail, you might not be overly interested in this book. But …

Is This Book For You?

Are you sometimes guilty of indulging yourself after making $1000, read this book? It would change your mind. This book simply tells you that, “The reward for work is MORE WORK”.

FROM ACORNS… HOW TO BULD A BRILLIANT BUSINESS FROM SCRATCH

AUTHOR: Caspian Woods

This book is probably the most humorous and best illustrated book on entrepreneurship I’ve read. Caspian takes you through the practical aspect of building a real business. That the book (alongside The Entrepreneurs Book of Checklists) was produced by Pearson Prentice Hall really helped. You have to lay your hands on the book to see what I mean. It’s actually a bestseller.

Why this book is different is because it is packed with practical wisdom and tips from countless entrepreneurs who have been there and done it. You can learn from their mistakes and discover everything they wish they had known before they started out – so you can get it right first time.

Why You May Not Like the Book

I don’t really think there is something that would repel you in this book, it’s a gem (at least that’s what it is to me).

Think and Grow Rich

Author: Napoleon Hill

Get A Copy!

This was the book that started everything. When a friend (Timothy) and I came across this book in my Dad’s library, little did we know that we were about to embark on a really long (but interesting) journey.

If you really need to know the power behind a single thought and how backing it up with desire will work wonders, check this book out. The language seems archaic but it’s well worth all the stress. It was when I read part this book that I knew there was indeed more to life than what fate says. You would do yourself a great favour by laying your hands on the book and more importantly, putting the laws into practice.

What You May Not Like About This Book

The language used seemed archaic enough but what really made it difficult for me to read this book was the layout/design. It really didn’t give me enough motivation to keep reading. Sometimes it is the design of a book that keeps me reading. The words were not spaced enough and paragraphs could sometimes get very long. Simply, I got bored.

Is This What You Need?

If you are low on steam or you have an idea and you don’t know what to do with it, read this book.

The Richest Man in Babylon

Author: George S. Clason

The Richest Man in Babylon gave me the idea of saving 10% of whatever income I get but more importantly to write it down. Since then I’ve gone ahead to use like 3 big diaries and quite a number of small ones too. This book taught me the power of $1. I found out that when I pen down my expenses for a period of time, I discovered lots of unnecessary expenses I used to make back then and I was able to put a plug to such.

George S. Clason clearly stressed the importance of hard work and enterprise. You cannot achieve anything if you don’t work HARD to achieve it.

What You Might Not Like About the Book

Like Think and Grow Rich, it is written in old English.

Is This What You Need?

If you have an issue with your spending habits or you have problem with aligning your goals or plans, read this book.

The Richest Man in Babylon for Today

Author: Fred Siegel

Fred Siegel does a good job of replicating George Clason’s original book and making it applicable to the 21st century entrepreneur. Although most of what he said had the same binding principles, he used examples of present day activities.

An interesting fact about the three books above – I got them all from my parents’ library and we (my friend and I) got them all lost. How’s that for entrepreneurship? Lol.

What You May Not Like About The Book

Nothing really except that he kept mentioning his products in some of the examples he gave (if I can rightly remember). Apart from this I am not sure anything else in the book pissed me off.

Is This What You Need?

You can get this book if you have read the original book but you’ve not got a hang on it.

RICH DAD POOR DAD

AUTHOR: Robert T. Kiyosaki with Sharon Lechter

While Think and Grow Rich inspired me to start working towards getting rich, this book showed me that I really had to get out of the Rat Race and be financially free. If the money I have would be of any meaning, it should come with some level of freedom, financial freedom.

I am surprised that people have a thing against Robert for not revealing the identity of his “Rich Dad” or for failing to tell people “How” to get rich. What I know to be true is that all you need is a “Why” for getting rich, if your “Whys” are strong enough you would definitely find a “How”. Find reasons WHY you have to succeed and suggestions would come automatically. It’s not rocket science.

What You Might Not Like About The Book

NOTHING! Well,, as far as I’m concerned.

Is This What You Need?

Are you tired of your 9 to 5 job or of working for “The Man?” Get this book (plus some other ones I would still mention) and begin your quest for financial freedom.

CASHFLOW QUADRANT (RICH DAD POOR DAD 2)

AUTHOR: Robert T. Kiyosaki with Sharon L. Lechter

This is the sequel to Rich Dad Poor Dad. It rightly shows that there are four quadrants where every working person belongs – The Employee and the Self Employed on the left side while The Businessman and The Investor are on the right side of the quadrant.

The people in control are those on those on the right while those that are on the left are the controlled class. The Business people and Investors are in control of the economy; they pay less tax, are able to spend more and they also have the ability to make more money faster (this is the class you will see me in some few years from now).

What You May Not Like About The Book

There aren’t many tips and in depth examples on How to Get Rich. He tries to make you change your philosophy about money, work and the rich so that you can develop a system that suits you. I totally agree with this.

Is This What You Need?

If you intend getting out of the rat race, if you want to start creating systems instead of working in them, this book might be for you.

RICH DAD’S GUIDE TO INVESTING

AUTHOR: Robert T. Kiyosaki with Sharon L. Lechter

Robert goes in depth in this book to discuss the types of investors we have, ranging from the stock market investor to the Ultimate Investor, one whose company goes public. Whatever business I intend starting in the future, I intend selling them for millions so this book really worked and still works for me.

What You Might Not Like About The Book

If you are pleased with your current financial position and you don’t envisage a change in the near future, this book might not be for you.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SELLING

AUTHOR: Brian Tracy

The purpose of this book is to give you a series of ideas, methods, strategies, and techniques that you can use immediately to make more sales, faster and easier than ever before. You can double and triple your sales – in any market.

Tom Hopkins had this to say about the book:

“Understanding the psychology behind the selling process is critical if you desire to achieve the success of your dreams. This book is your key to that understanding”

Why You May Not Like This Book

Though it is a very good read, I didn’t find it interesting because of the volume and especially the lack of illustrations. I love illustrations. So after buying it for two years, I have not finished reading it ONCE. It’s still as good as when I bought it on Thursday, 29th January 2009. Sorry about that.

Is This Book For You?

Are you a person that is directly involved in the sales process, maybe as a copywriter, a freelance writer, a blogger or guest poster; you would need this.

EAT THAT FROG

AUTHOR: Brian Tracy

This is a book I find easier to read compared to The Psychology of Selling. It is divided into 21 tasks where each one is complete in itself; all are necessary. One strategy might be effective in one situation and another might apply to another task.

All together, the twenty-one ideas represent a smorgasbord of personal effectiveness techniques that you can use at any time, in any order or sequence that makes sense to you ate the moment.

Why You Might Not Like This Book

I can’t think of one at the moment…Maybe later. Lol

THE RULES OF WEALTH

AUTHOR: Richard Templar

Another “R” and yet another “Richard”. The Rules of Wealth analyses the behaviours, the mind-sets, the lifestyles and the financial know-how behind becoming a richer, happier and more prosperous you.

The book is divided into five parts: Thinking Wealthy, Getting Wealthy, Get Even Wealthier, Staying Wealthy and Sharing Your Wealth. It can be your personal code for prosperity if you want it to.

Why You May Not Like This Book

Richard Templar has done a very good job with this book just like the other books in “The Rules of…” series. But you might not like the fact that there are very few real life instances. Still an awesome resource though.

RETIRE YOUNG RETIRE RICH

AUTHOR: Robert T. Kiyosaki with Sharon L. Lechter
Date of Purchase: Tuesday, 3rd February 2009

Do you want to retire at an age where others are just planning to get their first promotion at work? This book would teach you how to take steps to secure your financial future long before your mates even think of starting a family(at least in my own case).

And for parents, this book teaches you how to financially train your children to see what their mates cannot see. Even if you’re 60 or above, you can still give your children or grandchildren as gifts. It could save you some gray hair.

What You May Not Like About This Book

As with his other books, Richard hammers a set of points repeatedly and this could be annoying to some people.

Is This What You Need?

You may have read some books in the Rich Dad Series but you remain unsatisfied… If that’s the case with you by all means get this one. It wouldn’t disappoint you; at least it didn’t disappoint me.

RICH DAD’S “THE BUSINESS SCHOOL”

AUTHOR: Robert T. Kiyosaki

This book is basically for people interested in building networks. The “networks” I mean here is actually more of Network Marketing, this is why the book failed to impress me like the previous ones I read.

Robert however made a good work of showing how to use Network marketing to hone your selling skills. It was when he was learning how to sell that he met his wife. Who knows you might also want to try that. (Laughs)

What You Might Not Like About The Book

The book is narrowed to cater for those interested in Network Marketing and it moght be no good to you if you are not interested.

Is This Book For You?

If you love building networks or business systems, you might want tyo get this book. It would open your eyes to the real form of Network Marketing

CONVERSATIONS WITH MILLIONAIRES

AUTHORS: Mike Litman and Jason Oman

This is one of my favourites, Mike Litman of the Mike Litman Show that airs in Long Beach, NY along with his friend transcribe the interviews he’s had with many popular entrepreneurs and is likeable character and deep research really helped these people go into details on how they were able to make money.

Some of the people interviewed in this book are – Jim Rohn (a worldwide success mentor to millions of people), Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield (of the super-successful Chicken Soup For The Soul Book Series),Wally ‘Famous’ Amos (the chocolate chip cookie king), Robert Allen (Author of Making Money, Multiple Streams of Income, Multiple Streams of Internet Income, et cetera) and others.

What You Might Not Like About This Book

I am not sure you would have something against this book. Really. It is that good.

MULTIPLE STREAMS OF INCOME

AUTHOR: Robert G. Allen

Have you noticed that most of the names of the authors I mentioned here start with an “R” and that “Robert” is the most common name? Well here you have another “R” and another “Robert”. Isn’t that something?

Robert Allen is one of my favourite authors and this is my favourite among his books. He laid out explicitly different business models (Info Marketing, Network Marketing, Real Estate, and even Internet Marketing). Right at the beginning of the book, he made a strong case for the power of $1.

If you are told to choose between $1,000,000 and $1 that would double itself every day for 30 days what would you choose? The $1 million of course! But you would be surprised to find out that the $1 option would have generated way more than $1 million after 30 days. I love this book.

Why You May Not Like This Book

Robert Allen did an awesome job here but some of the information might need to be updated as they are getting obsolete.

Is This Book For You?

If you do not want to put all your financial eggs in a basket (which I highly recommend even in blogging), then this book would teach you what streams you can create and that can all eventually add up to a massive “river” of income.

HOW TO READ A PERSON LIKE A BOOK

AUTHOR: Gerald I. Nierenberg with Henry H. Calero

This book was derived from thousands of experiments, seminars, photographs, and personal observations. The authors Gerald and Henry have arrived at an unusual and revealing approach to nonverbal communication which can teach anyone not only how to interpret body gestures but also what to do about the interpretation.

You would be able to find out:
*. How to keep a controlling hand in arguments and negotiations
*. How to tell whether your opponent is lying.
*. How boredom or defensiveness is revealed and how to overcome both
*. How to read gestures that are feigned or have double meanings
*. And much more

Why You May Not Like This Book

If you don’t intend to get into any form of negotiation or argument in the near future, you can pass this.

Is This Book For You?

I know I would always have to enter negotiations and I also do a bit of poke-nosing from distance, so I very much need this book. You might not need it if you are an angel….
