Chris Guthrie Interview – Founder of Make Money On The Internet

Chris Guthrie

Hello Everyone,

I am happy to introduce a special person here today. He blogs at Make Money On The Internet and he has achieved a lot in his many years of blogging. This guy started making money online as far back as 2005, a time when most of us were just coming to grips with what the internet was all about.

Chris Guthrie has greatly impressed me with his work ethic – he gave me answers just a few hours (if not minutes) after I sent him the questions of this interview. He’s really blew me away. I would suggest you save or bookmark his this post because he gave some very cool insights here.

And to all you guys that left comments, tweeted and shared the previous post about Colin Wright I say a big THANK YOU! You guys are inspiring me to do more.

And here is Chris Guthrie… Pay attention to the point he made about losing all the money he initially made and how he was able to bounce back.

The Best Advice I Got?

Focus your attention on one website and make it the best

Favourite Quote

“Living life is like a game of monopoly. You may end up with a lot of money and a bunch of properties but in the end it all goes back to the bank.”

(That’s my quote lol)

In The Beginning – Before I Started Making Money Online

I was always fascinated with concept of making money online ever since I visited one of my favorite Nintendo news websites back in late 2004 that had Adsense units on it. When the owner (who was just a kid sorta like me at the time) told me that it was making him $2 a day I was like “What? You can make money from writing online about stuff you love?” I was very interested in the concept but didn’t know how I’d get any traffic and I got busy with other things so I sort of put it out of my mind.

Everything was Business As Usual Until This Happened

A year later when I was in my college video editing class and I created a Halo montage (see them at thehalogod.com) and put it online a bunch of people started sending me friend requests on Xbox Live. These messages were from people naming off the websites they’d seen my video at. So I had an idea to create another video which was even better than the first and use that as a launching mechanism to start my own forum which I called GamingVidz.com.

So I did this video and launched the forum and it was a pretty huge success in terms of the community that grew there and the number of page views the website was getting.

I Didn’t Stay On The Spot… I Kept Right On Going

The only problem was that even though the website was getting 500,000 page views per month I was only making $500 per month which certainly wasn’t enough to make a living on. It was paying for most of my college bills, but after that first forum I floundered may way through other websites and various business models until I eventually found the Amazon Affiliate program.

I started building websites with a physical product focus so that I could more easily have something to sell on these websites and these were huge successes. I earned $42k with Amazon in my first year of using them back in 2009.

What Have I Accomplished So Far?

I was fired from my day job in October of 2009 and in the following year I earned more than $150,000 in my first full year of self employment. That year I also had my first six figure website deal as well. Overall I had a great first year of self employment in 2010 and I’m excited about what’s next in 2011.

But I Am Not Done Yet, I Have Some Other Things I am Working On

My blog is called Make Money on the Internet and my goal is to reach 10,000 RSS readers by the end of the year (I’m currently at 5,190). I have an unofficial goal to make my first million dollars before I’m 30 (I’m 27 now) and late last year I set a 20 year goal to buy the Guthrie Castle in Scotland.

If I Am To Start All Over Again, I will Do These Three Things FIRST

Have an idea on how your website can make money. When I first got started I thought traffic would be enough and it really isn’t. Targeted higher value traffic is the key. Ask yourself how much money your visitor is worth and if the answer is very little, you may not be in the best niche.

The Ball Is In Your Court

I hope the interview/profile inspired you. Making money on the internet is not rocket science, but it’s not an All-Play-And-No-Work-Affair either. You need to take REAL action NOW. There is this Chinese quote I really love and it’s what I would leave you with today:

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the next best time is NOW”.

Peace!

P.S: I would post my March update very soon. Stay tuned for the big announcements I have.

Hi Emmanuel, that was great insights from Chris and thanks for sharing the Chinese quote. I just started blogging and so that quote is very relevant for me. I was surprised that Chris only spends 10 hours or less on his blog. I wondered how long he spent on his blog the first couple of months. Just curious :)

Enmmanuel, aloha. Thx for giving Chris such great questions to answer. The format and the flow made it very easy to follow the story. Because of your introduction, I look forward to learning more of his insights on his blog and through social media connections.

As it happens, that quote is one of my favorite as well. We cannot change the past; what we can do, is DO IT NOW!

Best wishes for a great day. Aloha. Janet

…this is simply terrific! You’ve done it before and again and now again! Truth be told, I’m highly inspired, impressed and motivated with this interview.

The most obvious thing in this story is “know what works and drop what isn’t working!” This guy dropped his ‘non working’ blog and followed what worked and he’s now a success.

I say this “success doesn’t come to you on your bed, you’ve got to work your ass..” Good post mate. I really enjoyed it.

This post is packed full of great information, thank you! I am certainly going to bookmark this because I will want to read through this again.

What a powerful point that as soon as he stopped focusing on money that is when he started making money.

    Have a great day!

Pretty true that starting with a blog on making money online is not usually the best choice.

    Hi Emmanuel,

I like what Chris says about traffic not being enough to generate income. Your traffice must be targeted traffic. Very significant.

    Great interview. Thanks for sharing!
